Technically, there is nothing disgusting about it. It is an E unit. When EMD built these, there were two types, "F" units, which had 4 wheel trucks, and "E" units, which had 6 wheel trucks. As you can plainly see, this is an E unit. E units were used mostly for passenger service, where F units were used for both. The letter was followed by a number, so there were E3's, E7's, E8's, etc. Not being an Illinois Central expert, I can't tell you which they had.
